Palmeiras suffers an attempt at extortion with Bitcoin similar to that suffered by rival São Paulo in 2019.
Palmeiras board members are targets of attempted hacker attack for R$300,000 in BitcoinNOTÍCIAS
Board members of one of Brazil’s biggest football clubs, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, were the target of an attempted extortion with Bitcoins this week, according to Esporte Interativo.
According to the report, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 285 board members of the club received an e-mail requiring payment of R$ 1,050 in Bitcoin to prevent the leak of confidential information.
The hacker signed the e-mails as Edward Lorenz, the same pseudonym used in a similar attack on Palmeiras‘ rival in São Paulo’s capital, São Paulo Futebol Clube, in 2019.
The e-mail was entitled „Balanços e Documentos do Palmeiras“ (Balance Sheets and Documents of the Palmeiras), containing a list of the counselors‘ data, supposedly to attest that the hacker had gained access to sensitive documents.
In addition to requesting the payment of a ransom in Bitcoin, the criminal also indicated means to „exchange money for Bitcoin“, listing exchanges such as Mercado Bitcoin, Foxbit, LocalBitcoins, Coinbase, among others.
The indicated portfolio would have already been used for another Bitcoin scam, having received R$ 96,481 according to blockchain data.
The Palmeiras board says it will investigate the case and that it has already called the police. A message exchanged by the directors recommends that they do not open the e-mail and do not make any kind of deposit:
„Attention SEP Counsellor! We are suffering attacks from a blackmailer. Do not open any e-mail or file coming from Edward Lorenz and DO NOT DEPOSIT ANY MONEY!“
The pseudonym used by the hacker, Edward Lorenz, makes reference to the meteorologist who created the thesis of the „Butterfly Effect“ in the Chaos Theory, deceased in 2008. In the attack suffered by São Paulo on November 22, 2019, the criminal asked for payment of $ 1 million in total for the directors of the club, while in the case of alviverde the request comes close to $ 300,000 with all directors.
The year 2020 was marked by a series of ransomware attacks in Brazil and worldwide. In the most serious cases, the hackers got access to the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil, in addition to the Ministry of Health and the Superior Court of Justice.
